Module -Storytelling

Why storytelling and not reading or drama?

The main difference between reading a story and telling it is that the storyteller is free while the reader is bound, s/he has to hold a book in the hand and follow the page. Of course, the reader can also use voice and facial expressions to bring the story to life - yet it remains the words of the author, not the reader, that tell the story.

In traditional drama or theatre, the actor is the focus. In storytelling, the story is the focus. In theatre, the actor learns the replica by heart. The storyteller knows the story as an inner image and uses the replica freely to improvise the text. S/he can involve the audience, respond to reactions, make the audience part of the story, adapt the story...

We do not want to replace reading aloud or drama in any way, but encourage you to add oral storytelling in combination with active learner participation and skill development activities to reap all the benefits and have a wider range of methods available.
